The City Of Wheaton dates back to 1837 when brothers Warren and Jesse Wheaton laid claim to 930 acres of what would become a population today of 53,270. Wheaton is located 24 miles west of downtown Chicago and is also the county seat of DuPage County. It was a dry city from 1887 to 1985. Wheaton has forty-five churches, three high schools, 22 middles, elementary, and pre-schools, six private schools, and is home to Wheaton College. Wheaton is also home to the county fairgrounds, plenty of upscale shopping, a zoo, championship golf courses, public pools, a number of hospitals, and Cantigny Park which has its own golf course. Built by Col. Robert McCormick, Cantigny has two museums, one dedicated to the paper he once owned, The Chicago Tribune, and the other to his World War I First Division of the US Army.
