Welcome to Northbrook
The village changed its name to Northbrook in 1923 as an effort to improve its public image after the original name "Shermerville" became notorious for rowdy gatherings at its five saloons. The name was chosen because the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River runs through the Village. Northbrook is the corporate headquarters of Underwriters Laboratories and Crate & Barrel, as is the North American headquarters of Astellas, a Japanese pharmaceutical company, and Bell Flavors & Fragrances, an international flavor, and fragrance company.
