Brother Ralph and Morgan Babcock settled in a grove of trees along the DuPage River in the 1930s known as Babcock's Grove. Glen Elyn developed to the west and Lombard to the east named, after Chicago banker and developer Josia Lombard in 1869. Now a city of 44,000, Lombard is famous for its Lilac Festival, which started in 1930. Also, William LeRoy, who started the Little Orphan Annie cartoon strip grew up and featured some of the aspects of the house in Annie cartoons. Lombard's Norman Rockwell downtown continues to grow and redevelop, now expanding to include the community-owned and operated Prairie Food Coop where a theater uses to exist. Yorktown Mall is also one of the few malls in the area that is bustling. Lombard is 22 miles due west of Chicago's downtown.
