Originally Rockland was a camping association along Lake Michigan. The first settlers arrived in 1836, 35 miles north of Chicago. Rockland was, at the time, the only train stop between Highland Park and Waukegan. By the 1880s it had more than 30 hotels and rooming houses for camping. Lake Bluff became a village in 1895 and cottages began to be replaced with more permanent structures. Now with a population of 5,632, Lake Bluff is a Frank Capra-esque community of families, attending schools, working, shopping, living, and recreating.
