In 1845 the community of Cottage Hill was officially named after a tavern the original European-American settlers would frequent. In 1869 the town would be re-named Elmhurst. Now with a population of 46,000, Elmhurst is home to Elmhurst Hospital, the first in DuPage dating back to 1926. Elmhurst University was founded here in 1871. With a vibrant downtown, Family Circle magazine ranked Elmhurst as one of the "Ten Best US Towns for Families" in 2014. Chicago's Loop is 18 miles east of Elmhurst.
